Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility

As a privately-held group of companies, the basic principle of sustainability is deeply rooted and one of our most important corporate values. "Thinking in generations instead of quarters" characterizes family-owned companies like ours. Materna sees itself as having this social responsibility and accepts it actively and gladly.

As a member of the UN Global Compact and the German Global Compact Network (DGCN), Materna is officially committed to sustainable business practices as well as to the implementation of ten principles of the UNGC relating to human rights, labor standards, environmental protection and anti-corruption. The UN Global Compact is the world's largest and most important initiative for sustainable corporate governance. The German Global Compact Network brings together the German signatories of the UN Global Compact: we are part of more than 700 signatories consisting of companies, civil society, academia, associations and the public sector.

UN Global Compact has established 17 sustainability goals, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Materna has selected six sustainability goals that we as a company will be particularly active in promoting. Materna wants to make a real substantial contribution that is in line with its business purpose and values as a family business, so that the goals can be filled with life. We take into account existing points of connection to the company, what opportunities we have in the first place, and what opportunities arise from this for further entrepreneurial development.

  • Quality Education (SDG 4)

    The promotion of young IT talent and continuous investment in training and development have always been firmly anchored at Materna. This is achieved, for example, through high-quality training programs in innovative technologies, excellent training, specialized trainee programs, internships, the employment and training of student trainees, nationwide university cooperation, the annual Graduate Award for innovations in the public sector, general responsibility as an employer, and long-term prospects for all employees.

  • Gender Equality (SDG 5)

    Diversity is already an important part of Materna's culture. Materna is proud to employ people from a total of 44 different nations from four continents. They are an important success factor in a globalized economy. Mixed teams, equal pay for the sexes, taking parental leave, including for fathers, and part-time models for all sexes are valuable components of what we offer. In addition, Materna is one of the signatories of the Diversity Charter and will make the diversity we live even more visible in the future.

  • Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG8)

    As a privately-held business, "thinking in terms of generations rather than quarters" is a firm principle. Responsibility as an employer and the security and appreciation of our own employees form the basis of our corporate culture.

    Digitization and innovative IT solutions for customers from medium-sized businesses and corporations have been part of Materna's core competencies for over 40 years. Materna provides reliable and resilient IT architectures and sustainable processes and implements future-proof digitization solutions.

  • Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11)

    Digitization solutions for public administration is one of the most important pillars in the company. With its projects, Materna actively contributes to making cities and communities more sustainable and resilient.

  • Climate Action (SDG 13)

    Sustainable management in the ecological sense as well as climate protection are still a young field of activity for Materna. In the future, Materna will also assume responsibility more strongly under ecological aspects and invest, for example, in forest protection and modern sustainability technologies. We want to be climate-neutral by 2025 and are already well on track compared to companies in our industry. The measures include switching to green electricity throughout Germany, successive conversion of the vehicle fleet and a climate-neutral data center.

Social Projects

Our commitment extends across all locations by continuously engaging in projects that benefit both socially and economically disadvantaged people and the welfare of animals. 

With our 2023 Christmas donation, we are supporting three projects that are particularly close to our employees' hearts and enabling them to implement new initiatives.
